At Liberty
Here’s a neat video of trick horse trainer, Tommie Turvey, and his two horses Joker and Ace, performing a liberty act.
I don’t believe in everything Tommie Turvey does in his training, but I do think he generally cares about his horses and their well-being. I also think we can learn something from every type of horse trainer out there – adapting it to your views and ways of teaching.
Chincoteague Minnow
This video made me long to do a liberty act with the trick ponies. Alas, Chincoteague Minnow will probably never be able to do a truly noteworthy liberty performance due to his arthritis. Perhaps someday Blitz and Boomer will be advanced enough to perform at liberty with me – but we are a long way from that. Minnow certainly could do it now, but watching him limp around isn’t exactly beautiful – it mostly looks cruel. I always struggle with asking Minnow to perform (which he absolutely loves) and having him look uncomfortable as he limps even at the walk. But the fact is Minnow lives with this pain everyday, if I never asked him to move I would be faced with an even bigger blimp of a pony that would undoubtedly face even more health problems due to his weight. But to an onlooker it can look as if I am “forcing” (which if anyone knows me they know I would NEVER force my horses to do anything) this limping pony to perform. The truth is he performs because he wants to not because he has to.
The Greening of Whitney Brown
One of my childhood friends (who I learned to ride with!) now works at a Gypsy Vanner Farm, El Brio Vanner, across the street from my farm. Her favorite horse, Odd Job Bob, is the star in a movie that is currently filming, “The Greening of Whitney Brown”. Bob spent most of this summer with famous trick trainer, Tommie Turvey, where he learned to lay down among many other tricks. I’ve been watching Tommie’s Youtube channel all summer as I’ve seen videos of Bob learning liberty signals and tricks specific to the movie. I feel like I know a movie star…even though I still haven’t met Bob!
In the spring I brought two of the Trick Ponies over to El Brio Vanner to give my friend a preview of what I had taught them and how I had taught them – unfortunately Bob had already left to get training for his big movie debut. I’m hoping when he finally returns home in a few weeks I will get a chance to meet this special horse. Maybe I can get his autograph. 🙂

THE GREENING OF WHITNEY BROWN follows the misadventures of ‘Whitney Brown’ (SAMMI HANRATTY), a privileged and popular Philadelphia teenager whose world is upended when her parents, ‘Henry’ (AIDAN QUINN) and ‘Joan’ (BROOKE SHIELDS), experience sudden economic problems that necessitate a family move to Whitney’s grandparents’ old farm in the country. There, far from her dizzying world of shallow girlfriends, endless parties and school pressures, she finds a new best pal: ‘Odd Job Bob’, a beautiful and spirited Gypsy Vanner horse owned by her new neighbor ‘Dusty’ (KRIS KRISTOFFERSON) — a crusty rancher who turns out to be her estranged grandfather. Through her new relationships with Odd Job Bob, Dusty and her parents, Whitney rediscovers what it means to respect not only nature and her family, but also someone very special she had almost lost touch with: herself.

Super exciting! I hope someday one of the Trick Ponies will make it into a movie – wouldn’t that be cool. For now I’m living vicariously through my friend! 🙂
The Auction – Pony Penning 2009
So yesterday I talked about the Chincoteague Pony Swim which was part of Pony Penning 2009, but there is another element to this annual event. The Auction! For days before the swim people line the auction arena with chairs, many tied together with reserved seating signs in the hopes of gaining front row access to the event. Some come for the pure enjoyment to watch the ponies being paraded into the spotlight, while others have the agenda of buying a foal. I wish I was the latter of the two, but sadly it will be several years before I can afford to add another Chincoteague to my brood.
Nightmist Legend and Tommie Turvey
The auction begins early on Thursday morning with opening announcement and performances by local equine groups. This year the Beebe Ranch and NightMist Legend made an appearance. Nightmist Legend is the son to the late Nightmist who died earlier this year due to complications of colic. It is clamied that Nightmist was one of the last living direct decendents of Misty of Chincoteague. Nightmist Legend is owned by Mike Pryor of Pennsylvania and is now being trained by the famous Tommie Turvey as well as several other trainers. Tommie Turvey is known as the equine etremeist as he trains horses to perform tricks as well as roman riding, he even trains horses for movies (a local gypsy vanner farm in my area is having Tommie train their horses for an upcoming movie to be filmed next summer). I have been following Tommie’s training methods some this year, as I now own several of his dvds. I still prefer to clicker train my horses, but some of his techniques are useful to combine with my method of clicker training. I had the privledge of talking with Tommie at the Beebe Ranch during my trip and I even invited him to come to my performance at the Chincoteague Pony Centre, but sadly he didn’t seem able to make it. But anyway, below is a clip of Tommie working with Nightmist Legend at the Auction. I believe the horse has only been in training for a few months, so I’m sure with further training by Tommie he will be a master of tricks!
Next up to perform were my friends at the Chincoteague Pony Center, and the world famous Chincoteague Pony Drill Team. I have never seen them perform in person, and I thought it was great! Some of the patterns they did in their drill were really complex – gave me chills! Anyway you can watch for yourself below!
Now on to the main event! The Pony auction! It really is quite a show, a group of two men bring out a feisty wild foal and parade it around the ring for all to see while the auctioneer does his thing. Some they have to muscle as the foals rear up and buck, but most of the time the foal quickly subsides to being led around. Its very humane I think, much better than being roped or let to race around an arena at the risk of spectators and the foals. The excitement lasts for several hours until all foals are either purchased or bought as buy-back foals to be sent back to the island. The foals are then penned up for the night to rest until they either make long journeys to their new homes on friday or are sent back to the island with their herds. Many that are too young to leave their mothers are sent back to the island as fall pickups and will be ready for their new homes come October.
All of the auction fun makes me dream of the day that I can take home a foal. Yes, I do have 3 very wonderful Chincoteague Ponies at home, but I dream of the day that I can train a foal from the beginning. I just know we will create a very special bond together. Several lucky children this year had their dream of owning a foal come true with the help of the feather fund, an organization that chooses children each year that they will help to buy a foal. Tommie Turvey at Pony Penning
So I have several blogs that I comb every day – one being the Equine Extremiest Blog of Tommie Turvey. I met him and watched his demos/exhibitions at the horse world expo in March of this year. He’s a trick horse trainer that trains horses for movies, events, and pretty much anything you can think of. This was the first time I saw him and I thought what he did was pretty exciting. I still prefer to include clicker training into my training (Tommie does not use clicker training that I have seen but I have seen him reward with treats), but I have incorporated some of Tommie’s methods into my training. (see the video below of me using Tommie Turvey’s method of laying down Blitz).
Anyway while reading Tommie’s blog this morning I was excited to see that he will be attending the Chincoteague Pony Penning this year. How cool! Then I started to think about how there is no way that my little act with Chincoteague Minnow at the Pony Centre can top anything that Tommie Turvey can do. Now I think I should be nervous! I really need to make sure I get my “act” together, Minnow and I have a lot of work ahead of us!
Either way I think it will be a lot of fun to see Tommie Turvey again, perhaps he will come to the shows at the Pony Centre and will even be able to give me some pointers.
