Maintaining Ringbone: Minnow gets new X-rays

Those of you that have followed our ponies’ journey from the beginning may remember that our little Minnow has battled with Ringbone since 2008. Ringbone is essentially a form of equine arthritis, a bone growth in the pastern or coffin joint of a horse. And because in a lot of cases people choose to euthanize a horse with Ringbone (because there is no cure), I have decided to document Minnow’s journey in pain management in the hopes that it might help someone else battling Ringbone in their horse.

Earlier this year we noticed that he seemed to be more lame on his right front (his initial diagnosis and treatment has always been for his left front), so we decided to have him re-xrayed since it’s been 2 years since we last had him checked. We made sure that we used barrier technologies radiation gloves and other safety measurements before the procedure.

Here’s the shot of his left front, 2 years after being injected with Ethyl Alcohol to help the joint fuse faster:

Here’s what it looked like the day we had it injected:

As you can see the joint still is not completely fused, but it’s a lot closer, and it’s actually straightened out some. Which I think has attributed to him being more comfortable on it.

So let’s take a look at the right front, the one that has started to bother him more recently:

It’s hard to tell, but there is some white shading around the pastern joint, and indication that Minnow is at the beginning stages of high ringbone in his right front pastern as well. Our vet consulted with New Bolton Animal Hospital, and determined it’s still too early to inject with Ethyl Alcohol for it to be effective. The fact that he’s also developing this in his other leg further proves that in his particular case it was more genetic than anything. It makes me feel better to know, no matter what I would have done, he would have developed ringbone anyway due to his confirmation.

But not to worry, Minnow is still doing well (he’s super Minnow after all)! And here’s how we’re managing pain today for him:

Minnow is currently taking 1/2 a pill of 57mg of Previcox daily as well as a scoop of GLS joint supplement. Once starting the Previcox we noticed an improvement in Minnow’s pain. He seems much more comfortable and we even noticed an improvement in his limp (on both legs).

Minnow and Ammo on Animal Planet, The Year in Pup Culture

On December 22, 2012 Animal Planet aired a new show called The Year in Pup Culture.

The Year in Pup Culture // Ammo the Dachshund on Animal Planet

It’s an action-packed hour of non-stop, over-the-top cuteness. THE YEAR IN PUP CULTURE looks back at the defining moments of 2012 as only Animal Planet can — with puppies! These adorable pups reenact the most memorable moments of the year, including scenes from top blockbuster movies and ripped-from-the headline bits. If these moments piqued public interest in 2012, they are getting “puppified” in the cutest hour on television.

The exciting thing about this show is that they had requested to use a clip of Minnow and Ammo playing together on the farm. This is the third Animal Planet Show which has shared clips of my boys, America’s Cutest Dogs, America’s Cutest Cats, and now The Year in Pup Culture. Well when I actually got to watch the boys on tv, I was excited to see that they had compared them to the Kardashians! I must admit, my guilty pleasure is watching Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Check out the boys in their debut:

Oh yes, you heard right – Ammo and Minnow are like the Kim & Kanye of Animal Planet! Well, except the fact that we’re best friends instead of lovers, although they do love each other dearly. Proof:

Ammo and Minnow

I’m pretty sure they now think this means they get designer dog and pony gear since they are associated with the Kardashian clan. Or at least a feature on Khloe Kardashian’s or Kim Kardashian’s Blog?

We’ll keep dreaming. 🙂

Cats and Ponies

One of the things I love about the Chincoteague Ponies is their loving nature. Their sweetness and ability to snuggle with just about anyone seems to translate to all creatures great and small. The barn cats on the farm are no exception to this.

Minnow in particular is “loved by all” on the farm. The cats, dogs, and everyone he comes in contact with instantly feel safe with him. It’s that special quality that makes him oh-so-loveable.

Is this not the cutest thing ever?

Those Eyes…

Chesapeake Lightning, or Blitz as I call him, has the most enchanting eyes. One look into them and you melt. I fell in love with those eyes just by looking at Blitz’s online ad when he was for sale in 2008. Before I even met him I had fallen in love with him, its hard not to.

And that nose, that soft fuzzy pony nose – its so kissable. Blitz gives the very best pony kisses.

I see his bright eyes and his kissable nose poking out over the fence. No matter how hard I try, or how much I have to do, I can’t resist sneaking over for a kiss. He nuzzles my face and blows sweet warm pony breath onto my neck, he lets me rub his ears and tussle his forelock. I wrap my arms around his face and he closes his eyes – he’d crawl in my lap if he could. I love him.

Happy Valentines Day

Valentines Day – you either love it or you hate it, but if you are like me, you know that no matter what day it is the love of your furry companions will always be there. They love you unconditionally and always stand by your side. I’m thankful that I have always been able to have my animals in my life. From the guinea pigs I played dress up with as a kid to the white rat my dad found in our basement and let us keep as a pet….I have loved them all. So here’s my little tribute to the ones that always love us back. Happy Valentines Day!
